What is the Warm Home Discount scheme in Scotland?

The Warm Home Discount is a government initiative designed to help households struggling with energy costs. It provides a one-off discount directly applied to your electricity bill.

The £150 electricity bill discount

The Warm Home Discount provides a one-off payment of £150, which is credited directly to your electricity account. This is a discount on your bill, not a cash payment. If you use a prepayment meter, the £150 discount may be applied as a credit for future use, or you might receive a voucher or another method chosen by your supplier. The scheme covers England, Scotland, and Wales, but Northern Ireland has separate support arrangements.

How the scheme benefits Scottish households

This scheme offers financial relief to low-income and vulnerable households by reducing their electricity costs during the winter. For many eligible Scottish residents, the payment is automatic, meaning there's no need to apply, simplifying access to this support. The discount is applied between October and March, helping to ease the burden of higher winter energy bills.

Who is eligible for the Warm Home Discount?

Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount in Scotland is determined by specific criteria on a set qualifying date.

Core Group: automatic eligibility criteria

For winter 2026/27, the qualifying date for eligibility is 23 August 2026. To qualify for an automatic payment, you must meet all of the following conditions on this date:

  • Your electricity supplier must be participating in the scheme.
  • Your name (or your partner's name) must be on the electricity bill.
  • You must be receiving certain qualifying benefits.

New rules for 2026/27 mean that more people in Scotland will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount than in previous years. If you are in the Core Group, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will contact you directly.

Qualifying benefits and the qualifying date

You will typically receive the discount automatically if, on 23 August 2026, you or your partner received any of the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit (both the Guaranteed Element and Savings Credit).
  • Universal Credit.
  • Income Support.
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance.
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
  • Housing Benefit.

What is the qualifying date for the Warm Home Discount in Scotland?

The qualifying date for the Warm Home Discount scheme in Scotland for winter 2026/27 is 23 August 2026. Your eligibility for the discount, including your benefits and who is named on your electricity bill, is assessed based on your circumstances on this specific date.

If your benefits claim is backdated to this date or earlier, you may also become eligible.

The role of your electricity supplier

Your electricity supplier plays a crucial role in the Warm Home Discount scheme. They must be a participating supplier for you to receive the discount. If you are eligible, the energy supplier who supplied your electricity on the qualifying date (23 August 2026) will be responsible for providing the rebate. If you move house, Core Group customers are still eligible if they move to a house supplied by the same energy company by the qualifying date.

Receiving your Warm Home Discount payment

Understanding when and how you'll receive your discount, and what to do if it doesn't arrive, is key.

When to expect the automatic payment

If you are in the Core Group and qualify automatically, you should receive a letter from the DWP between October and December 2026, confirming your eligibility. The £150 discount will then be applied to your electricity bill by 31 March 2027 at the latest. Most customers can expect to receive their discount before January 2027.

What to do if you haven't received your discount

If you believe you are eligible for the Warm Home Discount but have not received a letter from the DWP by 31 January 2027, or if you haven't received the payment by the deadline of 31 March 2027, you should contact the DWP Warm Home Discount helpline. The helpline opens in October 2026 and closes in late February 2027. It's important to remember that your energy supplier cannot assess or appeal eligibility decisions made by the government.

Warm Home Discount for park home residents

Residents of park homes in Scotland may qualify for a separate scheme if they do not have a direct electricity account with a UK energy company but pay their site owner for electricity. This scheme requires an application. For winter 2026/27, the payment is £150.

To be eligible for the Park Home Warm Home Discount, you must be a permanent resident in a park home in England, Scotland, or Wales, pay for your electricity directly to your site owner, pay council tax, and either have a total household income below £20,328 a year, or someone on a qualifying benefit. The scheme is managed by Charis Grants, and funding is limited and processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Additional energy bill support for Scottish residents

Beyond the Warm Home Discount, several other government schemes and grants are available to help Scottish residents with their energy bills. You can also explore options like the Priority Services Register for additional support if you are in a vulnerable situation.

Other government schemes and grants

Scottish residents have access to various support programmes:

  • Pension age winter heating payment: This replaces the Winter Fuel Payment in Scotland. For winter 2026/27, eligible individuals born on or before 27 June 1960, and living in Scotland during the qualifying week (21-27 September 2026), could receive between £105.55 and £316.70. Most payments are automatic, starting from November 2026.
  • Winter heating payment: This scheme has replaced the Cold Weather Payment in Scotland. It's a one-off payment of £62 for people on low-income benefits, paid automatically from December and through winter each year.
  • Child winter heating payment: This provides a one-off payment of £265.50 for disabled children and young people in Scotland, with most payments being automatic.
  • Scottish welfare fund: This fund offers Crisis Grants that can assist with heating costs during emergencies. Applications are made through your local council.
